Horry County Schools is a public school district and the third largest in the state. Fifty seven schools are represented with almost 47,000 students enrolled.
Now recognized as a ferocious insect, the Blue Jacket, the mascot for Aynor area schools, derives its name from artillery sleeve that once served as a "jacket" for missiles used in World War II. The sleeve, or casing, i.e. the jacket, maintained and protected the missile upon launch until hitting its target. The jacket became an important component of the missile structure and helped prevent it from implosion, or disintegration that could often occur when fired. The success of the missiles effective was greatly improved in disabling the enemy or competition.
The school color was always primarily blue as noted in the school's alma mater. Sometime during the mid 1940's the mascot was named the Blue Jacket.
